We are Award Winners!
I was extremely proud to accept the 2026 Earth Movers Award on behalf of Rothbury CAN, at the Friends of the Earth Summer Solstice Event.
These are the answers I gave to a set of questions I was asked.
What is one thing you feel most proud of this year?
Collaboration
We have developed valuable links with many organisations, and individuals. We now have such a strong network of like-minded people that it gives us hope, strength and inspiration. Climate activism is less daunting when you know many others have your back, and agree with your principles. We are particularly delighted to be asked to work with Rothbury Golf Club, to help them improve their biodiversity.
What is one thing you most appreciate about the group?
Supportive people in all groups, always there for one another.
I love how the various groups have evolved, and how new ones are forming. The work of ROWANS is fabulous, finding areas to develop with trees, hedges and wildflowers. This is making a tangible difference to areas of Rothbury. The small RCAN group within the Coquet River Action Group (CRAG) is doing excellent work protecting out beautiful river.
Most exciting is the new Community Energy initiative that our sustainable energy and transport group is building. This group is dynamic. We all hope they will succeed in this project, which would bring great benefit to many.
What is one thing that you want people to know, e.g. wisdom, solidarity, comedy - something you have learnt along your journey
Wisdom: knowing when to hand things on.
I formed and have chaired, and co-ordinated, the group from the beginning. My words of wisdom are that it is important to know when to stand aside and let more energetic folk take the reins. I made the decision to end my roles within Rothbury CAN (apart from Rothbury Trees) from my 70th birthday, in August.
It is time for others to take the lead, and I am proud to hand on a vibrant and brilliant organisation - filled with inspirational, committed, dedicated, and knowledgeable people.
